Bell / Hedge / Scarp / Wall

2023

A sound walk from the roof of Bill Drummond’s Curfew Tower in Cushendall to the top of Lurig Mountain, stopping every two hundred steps to record for one minute.

The two peaks act as antennas for sound: the tower resonating with the rumble of clogged traffic, its bell in a constant quiet peal; the scarp of the hill acting as a sound mirror for the upwelling of birdsong, machinery and waves.

On cresting the lip of the hill the soundscape stills to lark song and silence.

Image made from two one-minute film exposures, one from the shoreline and one from the mountain top.

Part of the ‘Natural History of Cushendall’ residency organised by Caught by the River in May 2024.
